Cameron Booth Road Maps as Subway Maps

design, design inspiration, design theory, maps

I read this article in the Huffington Post yesterday about Cameron Booth who is exploring alternatives to the standard US road map by creating a piece that simplifies the medium into something resembling mass transit maps. Article here.

I like the work as a study and as art, for sure, but do you think Americans will jump to use maps like this? I don’t think everyone finds the over-simplification of transit to be helpful. If you know a place very well, you’re definitely more likely to look for the in-between landmarks. But newbies to an area might appreciate just seeing the major highlights and landmarks to a destination. Also, my day job employs land surveyors and CAD designers who would flat out balk at this. Thoughts?
